Physiotherapy is a research-based, regulated healthcare profession that aims to restore your movement and functional ability. As a chartered musculoskeletal physio I can help with muscle, bone or joint problems from stiffness, pain, acute or chronic injury or loss of mobility with the main aim to get you back to doing what you need and love to do.
During your assessment, I will take a thorough history of all your symptoms, ask you about any investigations (scans, blood tests or previous surgery) and discuss any other relevant medical issues with you. This will be followed by a specific physical examination including observing movements while standing and lying, along with joint and muscle tests if appropriate. From this examination I will be able to gain an impression of your condition, explain to you the likely diagnosis and outline a detailed treatment plan.
As part of your personal plan, I may employ different skills that can be integrated into your treatment including manual therapy, taping, acupuncture and exercise rehabilitation with Pilates. Manual therapy is hands on treatment that can range from muscle and soft tissue massage to manipulation and joint mobilisation. I use these techniques, along with a wide variety of exercises, to facilitate a return to a normal range of motion. The aim to is reduce pain and hesitant movement; building confidence and strength at each phase of recovery.
POST ORTHOPAEDIC SURGERY - trauma or elective, for example knee or hip replacement, post ankle surgery or fracture.
SPINAL PAIN including neck and low back pain, with or without leg symptoms. I assess each patient individually to rule out anything serious. The treatment can include manual therapy (massage or joint mobilisation), soft tissue massage, acupuncture (this can be discussed before your appointment if you'd like more information), and movement-based exercises which are likely to include Pilates type strengthening exercises.
SOFT TISSUE INJURY - muscle, tendon or ligament injury or pain.
JOINT PAIN AND ARTHRITIS
FUNCTIONAL AND POSTURAL ASSESSMENT - this can be very helpful if you work from home at a display screen and sit on a non-office style chair at a desk or table not designed for daily work. Many people are simply positioning themselves awkwardly using the wrong furniture!
PAIN MANAGEMENT - chronic pain issues.
